Reading Ambassadors To Inspire A Fiction Addiction

in Courthill Infant School

At Courthill Infant School we are busy recruiting our Reading Ambassadors across year 6. We aim to roll out this initiative to lower year groups as the academic year progresses.

We will task the children to work together to design our very own bespoke school Reading Ambassador badge and Pop-Up Bookshop will help to supply the badges for each of our Reading Ambassadors to proudly wear.

So, what exactly does a school Reading Ambassador do?

Our Reading Ambassadors are paramount to inspiring other children to pick up a book and get reading. Their main responsibility is to enthusiastically engage children of all ages and all abilities to read a wide variety of books, explore different types of texts and genres, and ultimately, to develop a passion for reading for pleasure.

There are so many different ways we can promote reading for pleasure at school and we encourage our Reading Ambassadors to be creative and work together as a team.

Below are examples of the types of tasks our Reading Ambassadors may explore throughout the academic year:

  • Helping to curate and organise books in the school library
  • Reading with younger children or supporting those with different reading abilities
  • Organising the books in classrooms and shared reading areas
  • Pupil surveys to gather vital data about books and reading habits
  • Devising or supporting school literacy events including book clubs, story times, fundraising book fairs and author events
  • Coordinating school competitions with a book or reading theme
  • Positively promoting engagement with school Reading Lists and Reading Rewards initiatives
  • Composing letters to authors or local media publications
  • Designing and creating special book themed noticeboards or reading areas
  • Management of playground Book Sheds or coordinating pupil book swaps
  • Reading Ambassador assemblies to enthusiastically engage the whole school audience
  • Visits to the local library or bookshop
