Avonwood Reading Ambassadors Introduction
Hello everyone! We are the Year 6 Reading Ambassadors, and we are thrilled to introduce ourselves to you. Our Reading Ambassadors consist of Emilie E, Alba R, Daisy W, Vivienne M, Ella C, Lorcan P, Tilly C, Edward C, Lula W, Lila R, Ella T, Edan M and Ophelia T.
A Reading Ambassador is someone who wants to encourage people to read more books and find a book that they like – we believe that there is a book out there for everyone! A reading ambassador’s responsibilities include helping children to discover their favourite genre and helping them to branch out to ones they may not have tried before. Our mission is to spread the joy of reading throughout our school and help everyone to discover the magic of books. We can’t wait to share our favourite stories, recommend great reads, and organise exciting reading events. Stay tuned for more updates… and happy reading!
As Reading Ambassadors, we believe that reading opens a new world in our minds and that there is no limit to our imagination. When writing our applications for the role, we spent time considering what inspired us to apply:
“For a long time, I realised that younger children especially protest reading, however, I believe that I can show them how amazing reading can be if you just find the right book!”
“I think that we should try to promote reading in our school and open a new world for the younger years.”
As Reading Ambassadors, our aim is to help to make all pupils at our school passionate about reading and to get everyone reading more books. We all like exploring different genres (like adventure, mystery and thriller) and we love to read and inspire people during First Chapter Friday sessions; our aim is to get everyone delving into a wide range of books and discovering how amazing they can be!
We have lots of ideas for fun reading-related activities which could help to get everybody talking about books:
- Treasure hunt for books (Reading Ambassadors could hide books around the school and then people have to find them! Prizes could include a bookmark (3rd place), a prize from Mr Jackson (2nd place) and a book from the vending machine (1st place).
- World Book Week – ideas to make it even bigger and better than before!
- Dressing up as a book character to raise money for our school library.
- Creating book surveys to find out all about people’s favourite books – this will get people talking and give us ideas of what to purchase for our library!
A few fun facts about us!
Lila: After reading ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ (by Jeff Kinney), it made me write a day in the life of me.
Lorcan: ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ made me want to read them all.
Tilly: After reading The Explorer (by Katherine Rundell), it made me like Adventure.
Emilie: Reading ‘Elsbeth Hart and the School for Show-Offs’ (by Sarah Forbes) was the book that made me like to read.
Alba: At first, I didn’t like reading because I could never find a book that I liked. However, after reading ‘The Animals of Farthing Wood’ (by Colin Dann) it made me want to read even more as I loved how interesting it was to have animals going on an adventure!
Daisy: I had never found the right author. I started reading ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ but found that I wanted something more… Then I read ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ (by Enid Blyton) and fell in love with her stories. Now, I have discovered Anthony Horowitz (the author of Stormbreaker) and am really enjoying his series!
Vivienne: My favourite book series is ‘Dork Diaries’ by Rachel Renee Russell.
Ella C: I love writing – and I am not just saying that because I am meant to! I love being able to write all my thoughts down and turn it into a text that no-one knows is based off what is on my mind. It is a way of not having to talk to someone face to face. What I love about reading is the ability to find inspiration. My favourite genre is real life problems (specifically ‘Wonder’ and ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom’) because they show real problems that people go through.
Ed: My favourite book (I love the whole series) is ‘Stormbreaker’ because I love action books and Alex Rider is a very good example of that. Plus, I love the author, Anthony Horowitz (he is, in my opinion, the best author!).
Lula: My favourite book series is the Lottie Brook series, which is four books, because they are all fake accounts or diaries, which I think is really original.
Ella T: I like reading because it lets me activate my imagination. My favourite book is ‘Shadow’ by Michael Morpurgo.
Edan: My parents inspired me to read when I was younger. My favourite book is ‘Dave Pigeon’ (by Swapna Haddow). I like reading because it is calm and quiet.
Ophelia: Reading is fun and relaxing. Roald Dahl is still my favourite author!
